I Have Been Thinking About Hope

Oct. 25, 1986
The Regency on Laurie Lane

Dear L and Bob -

Hi! And how is at Johnson farms? Here at The Regency it one of those lovely October days - blue skies - mild mays - cool nights. The mums are beginning to bloom, the brave rose bush has some beautiful evidence of life, and the oranges are beginning to ripen.

Marie is resting after a busy day of post-Greer paper work - or maybe two days - or maybe... Anyways we have a stack of letters, bills & correspondence to go out today or tomorrow. Unusually, she is watching a chilling psycho thriller - a little contrast to the Boston Pops earlier. The World Series doesn't seem to interest either one of us.

And I have been doing a lot of those little things that have to be done - the yard, helping with all the paper work, adjusting the water softener, filing paper on my final campaign costs - $80 (But I'm asking for an exemption because I had no campaign committee nor political contribution). Now let's see what happens on Nov. 4.

What is happening with the families out there? Had a surprise sweet little note from Katie. Since she inquired about Sonya I answered the note and then sent it on to Sonya - hoping Sonya will write Katie.

Our families are all busy. You know their schedules. Ruthie and Becky joined their mother to outfit big brother (well, he's younger but he's the biggest brother they have) in a whopping new birthday-xmas wardrobe: sport coats, slacks, belts, shoes (3 pr), a suit, shirts, ties, a sweater vest, an outerwear jacket, etc. Steve took the day off (a Saturday) and enjoyed the shipping spree and being with his mother and sisters - and me? I was there, too, and had as much fun as the rest of them.

Becky is now in "our" league (not my little bebe Sunshine!) as a mother, grandmother, and 2/3rds of her children (by number that is) married. While working, she is able through a special program to get CC credits and by December will have acquired 30-33 semester hours! Last Saturday, while over here advising on Steve's wardrobe, she was also studying for a mid-term Humanities exam she had to take Saturday afternoon.

Steve is working hard to set some new priorities. He reached a point of almost total exhaustion that has had the whole family very concerned. Stevie was very pleased with his Dad's dry-goods loot: "He deserves it", Stevie commented. Stevie has signed a SADD contract (Students Against Drunk Driving). Before the State Fair opened SADD kids got in to the Fair and got free rids - there were 100,000 there!

John & Susie continue their whirlwind activity schedule. John joins Jeffrey in his sports activities - like T-Ball and soccer. In fact John purchased the team's uniforms and a banner: "Sponsored by the Wichita Falls Clinic Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Center"! We have been kidding John about giving those 6 year olds a lesson in advanced reading.

And so it goes down here. The cabin is closer for the season, we experienced our first snow in Greer (5 1/2 inches) & finished our campaigning. Now we await Nov. 4.  letter of endoresemtn arrived today. The White Mtn. Independent News profile (on candidates) comes our October 30.

Your sister is doing quite well. Did well at Greer - and has quite a normal flow of energy. A week after Greer was slower - but we're thinking to tackling the garage. Yikes!

And a special content section? Oh, yes - indeed!

I have been thinking about "hope". As you know I believe that every day is the birth of a new hope. Certainly it is evident with us. We celebrated our 40th new moon lately. There are good hopes & evil hopes; selfish hopes and unselfish hopes. But as I have observed the good hopes start first with hopes for the family, then for the self and then for society. The signs of the time indicate a change. There is a quickening among religious people in learning more about what may be terms the inner life.

I see much happening in the churches: transitions within the Catholic church; the growth of membership in pentecostal churches; the charismatic movement in the mainline churches; the awakening of braver expression and activity on social issues; the struggle within the So. Baptist over the inerrancy of the Bible. I doubt if the latter can ever agree since too many feel they have the true interpretation. I have been tempted at times to draw a cartoon of these people standing around the foot of the cross hitting each other over the heads with their Bibles. And there are those who will be angry with God that he didn't "save" the right people - and those who they wish never seem to appear in the camp of those not worth saving. Strange!

And how is industrious, practical L doing. Have you had all the worldly success you want. I bet you could et even more. And how's King Roberto enjoying his castle, his Tacoma estate and dominion?

I struggle with my faith occasionally - and then I get some guidance - mysteriously, intriguing - and I saw - "my journey will be safe because of the reliability of my Guide (I call "him" my Good Friend). Maybe he's the one who once declared himself to be "the Way, the Truth, and Life," I hope that's who it is...Well, some time with my Marie before Bed. Bye.

LOVE Frank

Clean and Thorough in Every Way

Phoenix, Ariz
Aug. 17, 1959

Dearest Mother,

I was just thinking of you, so I thought I'd write you a note.

It was so good to see you this summer. Wasn't it wonderful that we could all be together? We owe a vote of thanks to Lottie for arranging things. I suppose the biggest surprise was Martin. He has matured in many ways and has made an adjustment to his work.

I have Martin your note regarding the belt and other things. He said he would take care of the things you requested.

We got home from Lincoln without difficulty. Martin's bus didn't leave until 1 a.m. so we saw him to the depot.

Each of the girls got off as scheduled. Then I had a couple of days to rest up and leisurely visit and get ready to return to Phoenix.

I have been home about 10 days now. it has been very hot, though today it rained and cooled off. The girls and I have been trying to get a few things done before school starts in two weeks. Today we did some ironing and mending.

I know it is going to be time to return to the classroom before we get everything done. But then I guess one never does get done when there is a family to look after.

I hope that the social worker is able to help work out happier arrangements for you. Let me know what develops. We all are anxious that life be as happy as possible for you.

I want to congratulate you on your neat, clean appearance. You really looked nice in that hat and white gloves. Your room was immaculate too. I know you are good in your work - clean and thorough in every way. I think the Schultz's are lucky to have you there.

I hope Martin writes to you and helps you in any way he can. He is good-hearted, and I know is really fond of you.

Did you buy your little plant yet? Wasn't it fun to eat at the tea room? You should go there often on your afternoon off.

Well, Mother, I must close for now. Do write as soon as you can. I think of you often.

Love,

Marie and All

Finances and inertia are holding them up

April 8, 1955

Dear L and Family,

Just a brief note to accompany the pictures I finally got developed from our stay with you last summer. The enclosed two were the only ones worth sending. The few others we took were pretty punk - you know how kids look in the shade with wet hair. The enclosed two are swell for the record, don't you think?

Will you be going down to Portland when the new Pritchett arrives?

I'm enclosing a letter from Pop and Dora. It is in answer to the proposal that he take his extended tour of his kids this spring and summer. I get the idea that finances and inertia are holding them up. Do you think there would be any chance of we kids chipping in to help make the trip possible? Frank said he would rather do that then put money on a fancy tombstone someday. Anyway let us know if you have any ideas.

We're ready for Easter with a fresh outfit around (not everything new, but everything freshened & presentable). The girls have their first nylon dresses. Today it is Ruthie's birthday. We must get ready soon now, for we are going out to dinner & taking her favorite girl friend along.

Main news from our family is that Frank started a new job this week. Running the Children's Home, though a very rewarding experience, was far too time consuming. it really was a 24 hr a day responsiblity. Frank is now an audio-visual sales engineer to churches & schools. It is a good deal with a guaranteed wage plus commission.

Are you working, L? Does Bob still like his job?

Happy Birthday to Mark! I remembered his birthday was April 7! Wish we could all be together more often.

Love, Marie & all

Feb 16 1955

Dear Marie and Family.

Received your card and letter and two dollars yesterday and thanks so much for them. Dollars are sure money to us now - we get by and thans about all.

Got a letter from Martin today and one from Albert so we were both happy for I was waiting for a letter and when it dont come I get so blue.

Lars got more medicene today from the Dr he caught cold and I told him he best do something before it gets bad then it hangs on so long.

Well Marie I just dont know what to tell about his eyes I put those drops in every night only missed twice since he started so I've done best I could. sometimes it seems he sees better he says it clearing well I sure hope so.

Now that trip sounds so nice but guess its only a dream cant see how we can take it he said if his eyes get so he can work then we can go next year.

Sure glad you had a nice visit with Bill & family.

Guess your like we do love company never too much for us.

Martin didn't write much. Said he got a letter from Ruth and would write to her too.

Lars laughed when he called her Ruth.

I wrote and gave her Martins last address but we havent heard from her since I wrote.

Lars didnt give her his right address and her letter come back then she wrote and I ans. and copied the address.

Well I sure hope he does write to her.

Sure has been cold here we took car out two weeks ago & shopped & paid bills and then we stayed home then Monday we went out paid more bills & got pumpernickel and some groceries it was such a beautiful day but hes been in so cold so he had to take cold then we went out yesterday and this A.M. so hoarse so I thought it was best thing to do he isnt sick but I didnt want him to get bad.

Just cant get him to go to a Dr so I won.

Friday A.M. Well its raining this morning so maybe some snow - will go I do hope so for its piled on each side of the road or street.

My arm bothers me I think I hurt it before Xmas hanging up clothes I have to reach so high to reach the ends of line and I had a big wash so needed lots of line next day hurts and now if I reach up for put arm back of me sure hurts I havent hung my coat up since Xmas he does it for me and he ties my apron too. he says it just rheumatism well maybe. But I use the dust mop and mop the kitchen I mopped all over the house other two days then waxed floors and it didn't hurt and when snow come I took snow shovel and cleaned part of walks and it didn't hurt a bit but if I reach with my right arm I nearly scream hurts so bad so I think I hurt it. At the time our Dr was in hospital several weeks and I was waiting for him then snow come and we didn't go out so there always an excuse.

Sure hope this storm is just a rain but radio last night said blizzard so I'm dreading it.

Time to put news on and give him his morning coffee in bed then he can ge up and have breakfast. We enjoy that mornng coffee in bed.

Must close now - write soon.

Oh sometimes I get so sick and tired of the T.V.

Postmark: 21 Mar 1966

Dear Lottie, Bob, and Family.

I wrote to Marie and Albert. Now must write to you, Betty, and Ira. Sometimes I feel just like I counldnt write then again I dont mind, but if I expect to get letters I must write. There sure was a big write up about that son-in-law-of yours. I want to send paper to Ruth then Ill send it to you unless they sent it to you - picture of him and Jill. I hope Jill sent paper to you. I meant to wrte and see if I could get couple extra papers but I just didnt write.

Still having wonderful weather. Imagine 81 on March 16. I went to Salvation Army Golden Age Club on Wednesday had a nice program and an awful crowd every seat was take and they brought in folding chairs to have seats enough. Sure wish Lars could go too but he cant. Me or he rather raked yard and I picked up trash and burned it and oh that night I dont think there was a single mustle in my whole budy that wasnt sore. And I sure ached but he didnt even complain did say he was tired and I know - I was.

Well so your grandma at last, I told Lars now he was great grandpop now.

Oh sometimes I get so sick and tired of the T.V. seems he puts it on so loud it just roars and then I turn my ear phone off. Havent heard from Martin last letter he was on vacation and wanted his history magazines by air mail. I keep them until I hear from him sometimes I air mail one others its 9 to 5 but I keep them until he writes and says send them by return air mail so I do. I take care of all his papers that come here then I air mail them to him when he says to.

Well today is Sunday and we have been home alone all day seems every one has forgotten we even exist. Lars complains his stomach hurts so bad but he wont go to Dr. Just takes Alka Seltzer and Asperin but I just now fixed him some water vinegar and Soda and he said it didn't even make him belch so what can I do.

Planned on going to Lincoln this nice weather but weather man keeps saying rain this PM.Well Ive been caught in rain coming from Lincoln and I dont care to start when it says rain so best stay home.

We are sick one day well next and sick next

Well how does it work to be grandparents. Feel any different. Well 30 years from now they dont even know you exist. Oh well wait another 40 then be there turn.

Must close now. Write soon.

Guess Im just in a disagreeable mood today. Got letter from Marie and she sent pictures of Betty anf family and Ruthie and Kathy she sure is a sweet little Redhead a perfect doll.

The baby is doing well, too.

Feb. 9, 1954

Dear Marie

Happy Birthday! Happy Valentine's Day too!

I'm here at Betty's you know. And glad for the opportunity to return the baby care favor I've owed her since Jill was born.

Betty is getting along very well. She seems so much stronger than when Randy was born. She is up and dressed every day although she takes it pretty sensibly easy.

The baby* is doing well, too. She still wakes up two or three times during the night. But it is to be expected from a baby so small. She doesn't eat much at a time, but she likes to eat often.

I brought Jackie with me the rest of the family are "batching it". Mark is in kindergarten and goes only a half day, but Ruth feeds him lunch and watches out for him for the afternoon until the girls come from school. Bob has to be out of town a day or two each week - and on those days, all of them will stay overnight at Haakensons.

Randy and Jackie have been really good pals. There's enough of an age difference to avoid the quibbling of comtemporaries. Randy has been under the weather yesterday and today has had a temperature of 100 degrees or over. He seems lively enough most of the time and it's probably nothing serious. He'll probably stay home from school tomorrow though. He really has it handy here. His school is just over the back fence.

Just realized I haven't written you since Christmas and thanked you for the lovely things you sent us. Betty opened her gift from you first. (They were at our house) and I just drooled! So I was most pleasantly surprised to find my gift was the same. I wear ear rings all of the time - even around the house - so they will be put to good use. I have a new cobbler's apron just the same shade of scarlet, too.

Bob's tie is just perfect! I made him a navy blue checked vest for Christmas and your tie was a perfect complement. He has worn both constantly.

The children really appreciated their gifts too. We made this a very "practical" Christmas this year, so the toys you sent were most welcome indeed! One could easily see you have children for you picked gifts perfectly suited to their age interests. And how nice it was for Ruthie and Becky to include their very own gifts! And made by themselves too, I'll bet. The little sachets are tucked away lovingly in their drawers.

How is Frank and his work. Any tempting job offers? Wouldn't it be fun if he found a good opportunity in Portland?

*The new baby is Robin Pritchett Church, born January 25, 1954.

Almost have a girlish figure now.

18 Dec 1944

Dear Marie & Frank

Just finished a short note to Bets - received a Christmas card from her today - the first word since she married! Of course she has written L.

Says she is working four hours per day - good news for the doctor wouldn't allow her to work at all if it were not safe.

We finish training here this week, and I'll have a new address very soon. In fact, my month furlough is supposed to start next Friday or Saturday, so there is a chance I may be home sometime Christmas Day!

After ten days at home, only the Lord knows what or where! At any rate my address will change - I'll let you know when I can just what it will be.

Ruthie must be growing up to be talking and everything! L wrote that Roxanne can carry on a conversation of sorts now - and even Mel is getting so she laughs aloud when she's pleased with the world! What a whale of a change just a few short months can bring about in children.

Saturday (day before yesterday) we returned to camp after two weeks work in the field. While running over those d--- hills I lost another eight pounds. Honest, I've lost over 30 lbs since coming into the army! Almost have a girlish figure now.

From the schedule of work Frank briefed me in his letter, you folks much really be busy. Be careful - enough is enough. Don't think you can gain by doing too much work - you end up loser.

There's no letter to write about that letter writing is a chore - I hope you will consider this when you letter becomes too boring. All my work here is uninteresting to anyone not familiar with it, and no doubt L keeps you well posted on doings at Tacoma.

I will take this opportunity, tho, to wish you all the Merriest Christmas ever - and may the year to come be prosperous and joyous.

Sincerely
Bob

Yesterday was our first wedding anniversary

June 28, 1945

Dear L

Enclosed is a letter I received from Marie a while back. I've been meaning to send it on to you ever since it came, but somehow never "got round to it" til now. Excuse pleez.

I just finished a letter to Poppy. I haven't heard from him for some time and was wondering how he it.

Yesterday was our first wedding anniversary and Morgan came thought most nobly with a beautiful Swiss made, 17 jewel, wrist watch. Wasn't that swell of him. He also took me out to dinner and gave me one rose bush for one year. The rose is supposed to be increased each year till we've been married 50 years and I'll have a pretty decent bocquet.

This is just a note in a hurry - Let me hear from you.

Love
"Bets"

P.S. Love to Marty & the kiddlings

P.S.2. Please send the picture of Ruhtie back if you have one of her at about this age.

Martin came to say good-by to me

Note the red censor marks

Oct 10, 1948

Marie dear -

I received your letter a few days ago and the $1.00 bill also the receipt for the $5.00 that you had sent to the Storage Co. for me. And thank you, also thank Ruthie for the drawing.

Marie I answered you last letter and I had been waiting to hear from you. I don't know if you know that I attended the State Fair the first part of Sept. and it was interesting to see K.F.A.B. broad-cast. Also saw the tent where Bobby Breen was in appearing in person.

I wrote to Betty last Sunday and I asked her to write to me in 2 weeks. I explained how I wish that she would do me some favors. I wish that the members of this family would share a good family feeling for one another.

Marie you have only to think back about 10 years when Martin started kindergarten, Lottie in high school, Betty in grade school and you attending the University. I was so busy and do you remember all the noise there was most of the time from up-stairs? At that time we should have sat down and planned something for the future, for some-thing we could share to-gether.

When you move again please try and move to one of the towns where one of your sisters live and be patient and waite to find out. Will you pay close attention to my letter? Some times I feel blue and depressed and I hope I may be dismissed by the last part of this month (?) as it is one of my brother's birthday. I asked Betty to write to Mr. John Muller, First National Bank Building, Omaha, Nebraska. Could you write also and ask him about me? I want to go  and see about my things and I wish to pay my bills in Omaha.

Yes, you father brought out the receipt for the $5.00 you sent the Storage Co., also Lottie sent $5.00 I am quite sure.

Martin came to say good-by to me. I am trying not to worry about hope I will hear from him very soon. Please write to your father and ask if he has heard from him. As soon as you know Martin's address write him a nice tender letter. Please write to Mr. M at once. Also write to Betty and remind her to answer my letter. With best wishes to all. Your Mother.

P.S. I hope you can afford to send more money to the storage Co. and thank you. (Is this a wise procedure?)

Our work here grows more interesting by the day

UNITED STATES ARMY

28 Oct 1944

Dear Durands -

Thank you so much for your combined letter - and my apologies for not being more prompt to answer.

Melvin was down for a weekend, and we had quite a visit. It was good to see him again, and it was pretty rough on us both to say goodbye. He is back on his ship, and by this time may be in action again.

Our work here grows more interesting by the day - We are studying all phases of communication, attending classes day and night, and the training I am receiving will be valuable after this affair is finished.

Jean wrote that you had called, and she was pleased to have the opportunity of talking with you.

Things at home are going smoothly, according to L's letters. Melody Jean is feeding well, and growing pre schedule.

I'll not try, however, to give you the news from Tacoma - L can do that much beter than I.

I was happy that you, Marie, could take Ruthie to Tacoma with you. I feel certain that her presence had a great effect on Roxy, and helped her grow - for she has developed so much in the past few months.

Must write a lot of letters, and time is limited, so 'bye for now - Let me hear from you when you have an opportunitity - please!

Sincerely,
Bob

The Geneology Project

1997

Dearest Lottie -

I'm happy we've had several good "get-to-gethers." Seeing all the family has been great - you know you are so loved by every one.

Ruthie, Sock & Mark have been recruited as "point persons" for the geneology project. I'm going to enter all the data I have and then send each of them a packet to help fill in the gaps. I'm sure Mark will be talking with you.

I hope to see you before going to Ashland about April 16, but if that can't be worked out, we can get an extension on your tax and file before the end of April.

Katie is in Portland this week while Kayla has another week of tests and observations.

Lots of love

Ruth's Christmas Letter, 1951

Lincoln, Nebr.
Dec. 17, 1951

Dearest Marie -

I received your welcome letter and the money enclosed also greeting card. Later received the nice little letter from your little girl [Becky?] and thank you for all. About the money you sent it pleases me very much that you wrote quote "Anything you choose to do with that gives you pleasure will give us pleasure." Un-quote.

I hear from Martin and oh was I ever glad to hear that he is now staying with Lottie. So you may send the present you intend to to send him in (care of Lottie.) I too am going to give him some-thing. I am hoping that your father will come soon and I wonder if you did me the favor I asked of you when I last wrote. It was to call your father by long distance telephone and ask him to come and visit me. I have been staying from church instead of going. The reason so that I would be here if any company should come. At least one reason that I have not been attending as I had been going.

Last week the O.T. department had a program. They gave out little paper dogs and am enclosing the 1 I picked out. Refreshments were served also.

In a letter I received from Lottie she wrote that Bob was going to visit his siter and brother in Omaha. I hope that your father's car is in order and also that your father and Bob will come to visit me for sure. Now when you receive this card if you have not alrady called your father please do so at this season. Thank you dear. And you wrote "Now we all wish you the very best Christmas of all." My wishes are expressed within this card.

Write soon.
Mother.

P.S. The little dog is for Ruthie
Thank your little girl for the penny enclosed.

Ruth's Christmas Letter, 1942

Oakland, Nebr.
Dec. 24, 1944

Marie -

I received your letter and the $1.00 and thank you very much. I received this postal card from Elin and I am sending it to you. I was so anxious to hear from her if she received the dresser. I even sent a night letter to her about it. Let me know what she sends you for Christmas presents will you please?

I received a pair of bed room slippers from your father a few days ago. They were just the kind I like and they fit me too. That was thoughtful of him to think I needed them.

Don't you miss Betty now? I do and I remember last Christmas day we went to the Muse theatre to see Alice Faye, and Betty Grable in another picture. Both were in technicolor.

It has been quite cold weather here and now the ground is covered with snow.

I haven't had an card or letter from Lottie real lately. I sent her that little Christmas tree that had been yours. I put it in a shoe box and I hope that they all will enjoy the little tree. So now you know where it is and I think nice that, that the little tree is still in the family. If you wish to, you may sent Lottie's letter but I hope to hear from her soon.

So you have one of those sno suits for your little girl? I hope so for I think they are so pracitcal and you remember we sent more than 1 pair to Elin for her children when they were small. I wonder if her children wore them out. Don't you?

I have a few more things to do here and I hope, I hope that I can soon go to Omaha. I am over at Mrs. Backlund's some-times.

Please write soon and read over my letter as you answer it. I will close now and say good-by.

As ever,
I am,
Your Mother.

P.S. (Please excuse pencil.)

Elin seems to write with a pencil always.

Lincoln, Nebr.
May 31, 1960

Dear Marie -

I wish to thank you for the Mother's day greeting card and the check. I appreciate what you sent Marie very much.

I sent Martin a birthday card also, but no answer. Has he wrtitten to you lately? I intend to call your father and then I will ask if he has heard from Martin. I suppose you will send something to your father for father's day. Or if you come when your work is over at school you could let him know that you will bring a present. Like a frame for his parent's picture would be ideal. Or perhaps if you prefer you could waite until you come and see about the size. You can ask him to see the pictures then measure for the correct size as near as possible.

I received a mother's day greeting card from Lottie, Betty, and also Elin.

Did you have your little boy's picture taken as I asked you to. Then how he could pose with a hat? Then have it put in a frame for your father?

My brother Garfield came for me last Saturday and we went out to Weston. I planted 5 packages of flower seeds and marigold plants. Also a white rose bush. I hope they grow. I was going to send you the envelopes but couldn't find them when I arrived back to Lincoln. My brother took some pictures which he said were colored and that he had 2 left. I told him to save them until you came and, meaning to take your picture then.

Now Marie you must come as soon as possible for it is most important. And please will you write or call Elin to come about the same time so we can be together. Elin wrote a few lines with a pencil when she sent the mother's day car so I sent her a pen and handkerchief recently. Elin seems to write with a pencil always.

I know brother Garfield will be glad to see her, meaning Elin so please co-operate. Will you?

I suppose Betty and Lottie don't plan to come or have you heard anything different?

Now I suppose you are tired but hope it isn't asking too much to inquite at the employment office as I asked you to do. You could first ask what place they have in the line of house-work. You could say that I would be plain cooking, washing, ironin and cleaning. And as I said older people and a small family. Find out what they would expect. And I could perhaps do day work and  have a room some-where else. That way it would seem more like having a little freesom. And it would be marvelous after being here for over 6 1/2 pears. So find out about day work.

Marie I will call you next Sunday afternoon that will be June the 5th. Then please let me know what you learned at the employment office. As I said I would like for you to come here and then we could go back the same time. I hope your family will co-operate being you help make the living.

The flounce I mean is similar to that which I sewed on your apron which I sent you. Show the apron to the dress-maker why don't you? The flounce should be bout that wide as on the apron.

I have a new short coat, black dress and slip. Do you have a black slip? Would you care for one? As I mentioned before I have a pocket-book I will give you, or Ruthie.

And Marie as you said "something you wished should be done for Martin. Yes indeed that certainly is the truth. But the family are the ones to help each other. No our-siders. We the members of the family should be loyal to each other and faithful.

Here is a short poem -

We cannot know how much we learn
From those who never will return.
Until a flash of unforeseen
Remembrance falls on what has been

I have told Mrs. Shultz my brother Garfield and I think the attorney that you can't come until about the middle of July.

Now please listen closely when I talk to you over the telephone. If you wish I would send you $10.00 to help pay the fare. Lottie sent that amount for mother's day gift to me.

I will receive my wages in a few days. I think I will call your father then.

When I ask you about the employment answer so I can hear you. Also tell me that you are coming I pray.

Enclose is 6 clippings.

With love and best wishes,
I remain
Your Mother.

P.S. How I wish Martin would help me so I wouldn't need to ask you to favors for me.

Mother.

Durand, Wiltbank win LCSD seats

The Regency on Laurie Lane
Nov 10, 1986

Dear L & Bob -

Greetings! It is evening. It has been a beautiful Autumn day. Our mums are beautiful, the orange tree continues to grow apiece (and oranges too), and this year there are more lemons hanging over the neighbor's fence into our yard. This afternoon Marie & I moved the sundial to its new location in the west flower garden. New petunias were planted around it (Fun - working outdoors!)

Where it formerly stood in the back yard there is now a 7' 6x6 redwood post atop of which rest a 50 lb. school bell I purchased as a gift to Marie. It symbolizes her two decades plus of teaching. Yes, it rings. Loudly enough to awaken the dead (asleep in their beds)!

Marie is sound asleep on the couch having been lulled to sleep by the relaxing work in the warm Autumn sun. (It seems that each time I write she is resting or sleeping, but that is because I relax by writing. So we engage in our mutual resting periods.) We paid a visit to Dr. King (regular appointment) and I'm happy to report her SMAC, vitals, blood counts are all in the normal range, and that girth and weight remain constant. Today I visited the store and purchased ingredients for some holiday cookie baking. M-M-M! I can hardly wait. She makes such delightful goodies!

And this morning I took my car into a Glendale body shop for some slight body refurbishing due to a brush with an aspen tree while campaigning in Greer. Marie and I are gearing up psychologically to tackle finishing up the work in the garage. I had hoped we could get around to getting out to purchase a sweater (or 2) and new tennis shoes for Marie today, but we didn't make it.

Today they canvass the votes in Greer, The elections supervisor in St. Johns assure me it dealt with write-in votes only. My win still stands (unless someone contests it). I got the most votes in a field of six candidates. Jack Wiltbank, a life-long Greer resident, received the second most votes. So it looks like we two have a four year term on the Little Colorado Sanitary District Board. It was sort of fun seeing it reported on the front page of the White Mountain Independent. "Durand, Wiltbank win LCSD seats."

Ruthie and Jane took us to the Renaissance Fair at their church Saturday. It was fun. The staff and church members were attired in Elizabethan costumes. There were jugglers, archers, farmers market, handcrafts and a processional of HRM Elizabeth I led by Scottish bagpipers & including the Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Burghley, Sir Francis Drake, William Bradford, a pilgrim, etc. There was a short drama depicting the religious history of the time with HRM cautioning the Puritans that they were being carefully watched. Wm. Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway recited parts from William's play.

This morning I understand they had an Elizabethan period worship service follow by a feast in the patio on velvet table cloths covered with lace. Fun, huh?

Haven't hear from our busy Becky the last couple of days, but did have a visit from Rick, Kim, and that oh so bright chunk of a great-grandson, Collyn. Marie & Kim had a discussion about raising children who won't want to sleep and Rick made a payment on his car loan. Our dancing sisters are busy teaching and preforming this terpsichorean arts.

Stevie & Stephanie celebrated their birthdays together. We attended one segment: lunch after church and present opening at Steve's home afterwards. It wasn't the most joyous occasion. Steve seems terribly tired and uptight - he has us all worried. A letter from you and from Bob might be appreciated by him. But don't mention we told you of his "weariness", please!

Called John to let him know of my "victory" at Greer. John was very warm & congratulatory & expounded on the importance of my new post. All goes well there. "Their" candidate won handily in W.F. first Republican in the history of the county. The newspaper blamed his victory on "right wing extremists" and "big bankers." Since John invested quite a bit of cash into the campaign he figures he is one of the "big bankers" - but "right wing extremist!" - that made John really bristle!

And now a brief extra content statement or two from the older German Baptist preacher - Dunker Durand - or Dee Dee, for short.

1. My proclamation today is "Enter into God and one never leaves. Reading the lives of mystics they speak of a glory they experience. This glory is come remarkable way appears to be the essence of the experiencing individual." "Essence" = the permanent as contrasted with the accidental element of being.

2. Someone once described me as a quiet bull in a china shop: a repressed aggressiveness. Don't wave a red flag in front of me. Maybe they are right! I'll bet LCSD Chairman, Kellis, is sorry he was rude to me on the plan last June. The bull in me went into action and I burst into the Board's front door & broke some of their china!

3. How would you guys describe yourself: towering sunflowers or demure creeping vines (or periwinkle) - blossoming early like the crocus - or late like the Chrysanthemum? Well, better turn Mon night football off!

Bye, Love Frank

I mean full length and not just the bust...

Omaha, Nebr.
Feb. 1, 1947.

Marie -

I sent you a letter recently and hope you received it.

Marie I intend to send you a birthday present real soon. I hope you have a birthday cake for your birthday with all the trimmings. I received a nice little gift from my friend out in Monterey, California. She wrote that all her children went together and bought her a new gas stove as a Christmas present. This lady is only 5 months older than I am.

Marie if you don't mind would you send me money for the whole month, that is $10.00? I need it very much. It is real winter weather here with snow and around zero in temperature. I suppose the weather out there is about like California weather.

Marie, have your picture taken like the young lady's picture below. And have a photograph taken of all of you on one picture and how about planning to have it taken on your birthday when you will be 29 years old? It would seem like an occasion for celebrating. Please answer soon as you receive this. Mother.

P.S. Marie don't tell any one it is your birthday and plan out how to arrange your plans. Just some plain pictures but have full size, but not big pictures. I mean full length and not just the bust as the little girls pictures are you know from head to toe. You can sit down and Frank, you hold the baby on your lap and Ruthie standing in the middle. Don't wear your glasses. Please write and don't delay.

P.S. Pictures about size of this sheet of paper. Thank you.
