I Have Been Thinking About Hope

Oct. 25, 1986
The Regency on Laurie Lane

Dear L and Bob -

Hi! And how is at Johnson farms? Here at The Regency it one of those lovely October days - blue skies - mild mays - cool nights. The mums are beginning to bloom, the brave rose bush has some beautiful evidence of life, and the oranges are beginning to ripen.

Marie is resting after a busy day of post-Greer paper work - or maybe two days - or maybe... Anyways we have a stack of letters, bills & correspondence to go out today or tomorrow. Unusually, she is watching a chilling psycho thriller - a little contrast to the Boston Pops earlier. The World Series doesn't seem to interest either one of us.

And I have been doing a lot of those little things that have to be done - the yard, helping with all the paper work, adjusting the water softener, filing paper on my final campaign costs - $80 (But I'm asking for an exemption because I had no campaign committee nor political contribution). Now let's see what happens on Nov. 4.

What is happening with the families out there? Had a surprise sweet little note from Katie. Since she inquired about Sonya I answered the note and then sent it on to Sonya - hoping Sonya will write Katie.

Our families are all busy. You know their schedules. Ruthie and Becky joined their mother to outfit big brother (well, he's younger but he's the biggest brother they have) in a whopping new birthday-xmas wardrobe: sport coats, slacks, belts, shoes (3 pr), a suit, shirts, ties, a sweater vest, an outerwear jacket, etc. Steve took the day off (a Saturday) and enjoyed the shipping spree and being with his mother and sisters - and me? I was there, too, and had as much fun as the rest of them.

Becky is now in "our" league (not my little bebe Sunshine!) as a mother, grandmother, and 2/3rds of her children (by number that is) married. While working, she is able through a special program to get CC credits and by December will have acquired 30-33 semester hours! Last Saturday, while over here advising on Steve's wardrobe, she was also studying for a mid-term Humanities exam she had to take Saturday afternoon.

Steve is working hard to set some new priorities. He reached a point of almost total exhaustion that has had the whole family very concerned. Stevie was very pleased with his Dad's dry-goods loot: "He deserves it", Stevie commented. Stevie has signed a SADD contract (Students Against Drunk Driving). Before the State Fair opened SADD kids got in to the Fair and got free rids - there were 100,000 there!

John & Susie continue their whirlwind activity schedule. John joins Jeffrey in his sports activities - like T-Ball and soccer. In fact John purchased the team's uniforms and a banner: "Sponsored by the Wichita Falls Clinic Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Center"! We have been kidding John about giving those 6 year olds a lesson in advanced reading.

And so it goes down here. The cabin is closer for the season, we experienced our first snow in Greer (5 1/2 inches) & finished our campaigning. Now we await Nov. 4.  letter of endoresemtn arrived today. The White Mtn. Independent News profile (on candidates) comes our October 30.

Your sister is doing quite well. Did well at Greer - and has quite a normal flow of energy. A week after Greer was slower - but we're thinking to tackling the garage. Yikes!

And a special content section? Oh, yes - indeed!

I have been thinking about "hope". As you know I believe that every day is the birth of a new hope. Certainly it is evident with us. We celebrated our 40th new moon lately. There are good hopes & evil hopes; selfish hopes and unselfish hopes. But as I have observed the good hopes start first with hopes for the family, then for the self and then for society. The signs of the time indicate a change. There is a quickening among religious people in learning more about what may be terms the inner life.

I see much happening in the churches: transitions within the Catholic church; the growth of membership in pentecostal churches; the charismatic movement in the mainline churches; the awakening of braver expression and activity on social issues; the struggle within the So. Baptist over the inerrancy of the Bible. I doubt if the latter can ever agree since too many feel they have the true interpretation. I have been tempted at times to draw a cartoon of these people standing around the foot of the cross hitting each other over the heads with their Bibles. And there are those who will be angry with God that he didn't "save" the right people - and those who they wish never seem to appear in the camp of those not worth saving. Strange!

And how is industrious, practical L doing. Have you had all the worldly success you want. I bet you could et even more. And how's King Roberto enjoying his castle, his Tacoma estate and dominion?

I struggle with my faith occasionally - and then I get some guidance - mysteriously, intriguing - and I saw - "my journey will be safe because of the reliability of my Guide (I call "him" my Good Friend). Maybe he's the one who once declared himself to be "the Way, the Truth, and Life," I hope that's who it is...Well, some time with my Marie before Bed. Bye.

LOVE Frank

Clean and Thorough in Every Way

Phoenix, Ariz
Aug. 17, 1959

Dearest Mother,

I was just thinking of you, so I thought I'd write you a note.

It was so good to see you this summer. Wasn't it wonderful that we could all be together? We owe a vote of thanks to Lottie for arranging things. I suppose the biggest surprise was Martin. He has matured in many ways and has made an adjustment to his work.

I have Martin your note regarding the belt and other things. He said he would take care of the things you requested.

We got home from Lincoln without difficulty. Martin's bus didn't leave until 1 a.m. so we saw him to the depot.

Each of the girls got off as scheduled. Then I had a couple of days to rest up and leisurely visit and get ready to return to Phoenix.

I have been home about 10 days now. it has been very hot, though today it rained and cooled off. The girls and I have been trying to get a few things done before school starts in two weeks. Today we did some ironing and mending.

I know it is going to be time to return to the classroom before we get everything done. But then I guess one never does get done when there is a family to look after.

I hope that the social worker is able to help work out happier arrangements for you. Let me know what develops. We all are anxious that life be as happy as possible for you.

I want to congratulate you on your neat, clean appearance. You really looked nice in that hat and white gloves. Your room was immaculate too. I know you are good in your work - clean and thorough in every way. I think the Schultz's are lucky to have you there.

I hope Martin writes to you and helps you in any way he can. He is good-hearted, and I know is really fond of you.

Did you buy your little plant yet? Wasn't it fun to eat at the tea room? You should go there often on your afternoon off.

Well, Mother, I must close for now. Do write as soon as you can. I think of you often.

Love,

Marie and All

Shorthand with Champagne

Lincoln, Nebr.
June 9, 1966

Dear Lottie -

I received the writing tablets and I am writing on some paper now which you sent. Thank you very much and thank you for the mother's day card. Also your letter which was written May 10th 1966.

I am so glad that you are Jackie are coming. If you don't mind would you try to bring that corsage pin? Also would you see if you can try to find a pair of toe-rubbers? I have a pair of rubbers I will give you in exchange.

I am enclosing a greeting card for Mark. Your father is supposed to send him a gift. Also your father I hope sends the same kind to John - Marie's boy.

I didn't mean about work to do like house-work when you come. I was thinking about suggestions in sewing. Like for instance if you would voice your opinions should I try a dress on.

I am pleased to hear from your letter that you have some help with your lawn. Don't try to do too much your-self.

I am enclosing a clipping.

I wish that you would move either to Portland to be nearer to Betty or move to Phoenix to be inthe same city as Marie and Becky and their families. Talk this over when you are together why don't you?

Now to write something different. Rememebr I thought that shorthand wasn't a worthwhile subject to take in high school. Then later when I knew more about it I thought it was good. Then I wished you had studied more along those lines. Well I was thinking that I would write about what I saw on television. A lay was being interviewed as she has written a book and the name - Shorthand with Champagne. This lady is a public stenograph at Beverly Hills hotel in Hollywood. Well she was asked to see Barbara Hutton and that she is the wealthiest woman in the world. The stenograph's fee is $10.00. Perhaps some time you could try to borrow the book. Oh and the stenogprah's picture is on the cover.

Now if you buy any toe-rubbers for me would you see that they are for low heels?

I hope that you get as early a start on your trip as possible. And no need to hurry so that you are all exhausted. I hope you can stay more than a week. May-be one of your daughters can stay at your house while you are away.

I am looking forward toward your visit. One of my wishes is that we can talk over my problems sensibly.

Hope you have a safe trip and happy landing.

Thank you again for the mother's day presnet. I have a dress I intend to give you when you come.

With love and best wishes.

I am As ever, Your Mother.

The baby is doing well, too.

Feb. 9, 1954

Dear Marie

Happy Birthday! Happy Valentine's Day too!

I'm here at Betty's you know. And glad for the opportunity to return the baby care favor I've owed her since Jill was born.

Betty is getting along very well. She seems so much stronger than when Randy was born. She is up and dressed every day although she takes it pretty sensibly easy.

The baby* is doing well, too. She still wakes up two or three times during the night. But it is to be expected from a baby so small. She doesn't eat much at a time, but she likes to eat often.

I brought Jackie with me the rest of the family are "batching it". Mark is in kindergarten and goes only a half day, but Ruth feeds him lunch and watches out for him for the afternoon until the girls come from school. Bob has to be out of town a day or two each week - and on those days, all of them will stay overnight at Haakensons.

Randy and Jackie have been really good pals. There's enough of an age difference to avoid the quibbling of comtemporaries. Randy has been under the weather yesterday and today has had a temperature of 100 degrees or over. He seems lively enough most of the time and it's probably nothing serious. He'll probably stay home from school tomorrow though. He really has it handy here. His school is just over the back fence.

Just realized I haven't written you since Christmas and thanked you for the lovely things you sent us. Betty opened her gift from you first. (They were at our house) and I just drooled! So I was most pleasantly surprised to find my gift was the same. I wear ear rings all of the time - even around the house - so they will be put to good use. I have a new cobbler's apron just the same shade of scarlet, too.

Bob's tie is just perfect! I made him a navy blue checked vest for Christmas and your tie was a perfect complement. He has worn both constantly.

The children really appreciated their gifts too. We made this a very "practical" Christmas this year, so the toys you sent were most welcome indeed! One could easily see you have children for you picked gifts perfectly suited to their age interests. And how nice it was for Ruthie and Becky to include their very own gifts! And made by themselves too, I'll bet. The little sachets are tucked away lovingly in their drawers.

How is Frank and his work. Any tempting job offers? Wouldn't it be fun if he found a good opportunity in Portland?

*The new baby is Robin Pritchett Church, born January 25, 1954.

I just love my muu-muu

Thank you especially for the pictures, Frank!

Mar. 4, 1963

Dear Marie & all,

First of all, please forgive us for being so pokey to thank you for your very nice Christmas presents. I just love my muu-muu. It's just perfect to slip on over my clothes when I come home from school. Jackie was especially thrilled with the ring Steven sent. She wears it every day and is so proud of it.

What a surprise to hear Becky is married! She is such a sweet little girl and will make a wonderful homemaker. I've had a little gift for her - I'll try to get it in the mail tomorrow.

Our family is about the same. Bill, Roxy's husband, was notified last week that he is in the finals for consideration for a Guggenheim Artists Grant. If he makes it, they will go to Italy for a year with all expenses paid. They were here for the weekend - he gave a lecture to an artists' group Friday night. It was a pleasant surprise - he was very good. Roxy is the same - still at the store.

Melody is working at an insurance office and still at her same apartment in Seattle. Kathy got married, and so Mel has a new roommate.

Jill sang a solo in the music contest yesterday - she got a "2" which was pretty good, I thought, since she has had no voice lessons. She also sang with a group "The Eight Notes", who received a first place.

Mark and Jacque are about the same, busy at school and at home. Mark has had (and still has) a series of staph infections which are so stubborn to treat. Jacque has been active on a basketball team. They play once or twice a week, and their team is in first place. The unusual part is that they are seventh and eighth grade but are so good they let them play in the high school league, (It's an all city-county set-up, not school sponsored) and even so have been defeated only once all season.

Mom called last week and has been writing to agitate for one of us to come back there. She doesn't realize our responsibilities. I cannot make the trip, but she asked me to write to tell you to come back there at Easter vacation time. Write her anyway, will you? I don't really know what either one of us could do for her if we went back but I know there is simply no chance at all of my going on a trip until this summer - and even than is pretty slim. How about you?

Haven't talked to Betty lately - do you know if anything came of Morgan's legal inquiry about her?

School is going just fine. Grade-wise, I have a B-ish average, but I don't work very hard either. I'm carrying seventeen hours this semester and hope to keep on doing so. With a little summer work and a little luck, I could finish in three years.

Let us hear from you Marie - and again the best of everything to Becky and her new husband.

Love,
L.

Domi-nose

Glendale, AZ
May 1, 1985

Dear Bob -

Greetings comrade! It is May Day!

This is the day they celebrate by dancing around the May Pole in Red Square. Or am I confused? Don't answer that question!

Ah, well, whether or not that is how May Day is celebrated is of little import. Of import is my impulse to dash a note off to you.

Things are going well here. I did manage to catch a slight cold, so every once in a while I pull out my hanky and wipe my domi-nose. A domi-nose is a nose one develops from spending time playing dominoes.

Pretty poor joke! Youcould probably smell that one coming on!

It's hot here today. Technically they call it "warm". Don't believe it. It's hot! But we keep things watered. And they grow - and - grow - and ... 4737 really looks nice.

Marie is collecting ingredients to make a nice stew. She has also cooked up some rhubarb and is making some of her pressure cooked tender meat. This morning we did some major trimming and pruning on the orange tree, being careful not to disturb any of the new tiny "oranges-in-the-making".

In a few moments she will take to the couch for a rest. I hope she does. She will need it. She has been at things for several hours and at a steady pace.

Me? Well - I'm writing this letter to you. Later I will drop it in the mail at Hallmark and pick up some slides and prints there. (If there are some good and interesting shots I'll send some to you). Hm! I should be making the bed, too.

The family here is well. Jason is busy in the study here assembling an oak-veneer filing cabinet I bought. He is working off some time as an adoptee of the Creighton-Patch Kid program. He plans to go to Hawaii with the Creighton Youth fellowship gang for a work project there. Becky in busy (no?! You're kidding!)

Kathy is arranging her schedule so she can go with us (as a guest) to visit John & family in Wichita Falls the last part of May.

Steve is right in the middle of a high-powered fund drive at Creighton. Susie is our travel agent at the other end of the line in Wichita Falls where she is busy arranging transportation fo us from Dallas to Wichita Falls.

I surely enjoyed myself at Johnson Gardens. Thanks a lot for everything... the hospitality, bed & board, good company, trips, domino tournaments (I am too getting better!), coffee and conversation and just plain "buddy sharing". It was a relaxing time. I had time to think and study, too.

As you know I have a philosophical bent and interest. Maybe it's a drive.

I'll share with you what I have determined to be my basic belief. These are things one knows and things one believes. This is a belief.

There is only one Absolute. An Absolute is something everything can be compared to, but which can not be compared to anything else. The one Absolute is the mind of God from which all beauty, vurtue, and enlightenment flow.

Dialectical theology, however, proves that man cannot know the mind of God - only respond to it - not realizing in the conscious mind that this is what is happening.

We partake of the mind of God because we are part of Him.

Another thought. Don't get too attached to your Aug. 11 syndrome. I feel you have two or three (at least) good years ahead of you.*

Good luck on your garden. I have seen and heard the hard work you have been doing.

Gotta go.

Love
Frank

*We would like to help you celebrate your Golden weddning anniversary!

Ruth's Christmas Letter, 1951

Lincoln, Nebr.
Dec. 17, 1951

Dearest Marie -

I received your welcome letter and the money enclosed also greeting card. Later received the nice little letter from your little girl [Becky?] and thank you for all. About the money you sent it pleases me very much that you wrote quote "Anything you choose to do with that gives you pleasure will give us pleasure." Un-quote.

I hear from Martin and oh was I ever glad to hear that he is now staying with Lottie. So you may send the present you intend to to send him in (care of Lottie.) I too am going to give him some-thing. I am hoping that your father will come soon and I wonder if you did me the favor I asked of you when I last wrote. It was to call your father by long distance telephone and ask him to come and visit me. I have been staying from church instead of going. The reason so that I would be here if any company should come. At least one reason that I have not been attending as I had been going.

Last week the O.T. department had a program. They gave out little paper dogs and am enclosing the 1 I picked out. Refreshments were served also.

In a letter I received from Lottie she wrote that Bob was going to visit his siter and brother in Omaha. I hope that your father's car is in order and also that your father and Bob will come to visit me for sure. Now when you receive this card if you have not alrady called your father please do so at this season. Thank you dear. And you wrote "Now we all wish you the very best Christmas of all." My wishes are expressed within this card.

Write soon.
Mother.

P.S. The little dog is for Ruthie
Thank your little girl for the penny enclosed.

I have been here now over 11 1/2 years

Lincoln, Nebr.
May 31, 1965
1149 South 17th Street

Dear Marie -

Well first I should write that I returned safely from Omaha. I left Lincoln on a Saturday morning. When I arrived in Omaha I took a taxi out to your father's place and I think it cost $1.35 for the fare. After dinner we all went up to Blair to see my brother at the nursing home. He seemed pleased to see us.

The next day being Sunday I went out to Hilda's in the forenoon and had dinner. I had not seen her for some times and it was like old times and it was like old times to visit. Remember that picture which was in a colored photograph who was her grand-daughter? Well Hilda's grand-daughter is now 23 years of age and an R.N. out in San Francisco, California, when the earth quake happened. And that same evening he granddaughter called Hilda over long distance telephone to say how scared she was. Hilda's granddaughter is keeping company with a Doctor but don't intend to marry for quite a long time.

Well to get back to my trip I returned Sunday evening about 7 o'clock. Dora sent some green onions from the garden for Mrs. Schultz.

The other evening when I called over the telephone and Johnny answered - well it was a good thing that I payed for the call before I began talking.

You know I said that I wrote to Stanley about asking Elin to come this summer for a visit. Well I received a letter from Stanley's wife. And this is what she wrote - Quote "Stan received your letter, and we spoke to his mother and urged her to make the trip to Omaha. She didn't sem to have made any plans as yet. We offered her severeal suggestions concerning ways to make the trip, and she is now thinking about it. Stan's dad would like her to go to see you, too, so maybe we can all convince her to do it." Un-quote

Now Marie I was thinking of an idea and how would this sound? If Ray wasn't coming also why then couldn't Ray go with her as far as your place. And then come with Becky. I don't know how Becky intends to travel coming here. That is something I had intended to ask you over the telephone. The reason is that perhaps Elin wouldn't like to travel by her-self is the reason I mentioned this. If Elin could come with Becky.

Marie I hope I can talk to Dr. Palmer real soon and that I can be released from the State Hospital.

I wish I could be sort of organized at Randolph and visit with Elin and Becky and her family there.

Marie my friend Edna has been waiting for me for over 2 years now. I am hoping that what Lottie wrote and also your letter will be satisfactory. But I have to find out. Now in case I need more evidence I hope I can call on you and Frank. The social worker at the hospital said "I should stay close to my family." Well this is the nearest because I have known Edna since I was a child. Also the social worker said that the hospital would co-operate with Dr. Palmer. Now I wish to take all my belongings with me and Edna and a relative will come for me when I get permission. I am writing all this so there isn't any guessing about my plans.

Please keep this letter in a safe place so you can read it over later.

I wish to leave here just as soon as possible. I have been here now over 11 1/2 years and I am 75 years of age.

I wish you were coming vacation time so I could talk to you in person.

Hope you got the calendar with the clippings. When Becky comes I could show her what it is I intend to give her.

I will try to call you over the telephone next Friday evening., June 4th, 1965.

As ever,
Mother.

Please be at home Sunday afternoon

Lincoln, Nebr.
Nov. 9, 1965.

Dear Marie -

I tryed to call you Sunday. No anwer. Please be at home next Sunday Nov. 14th and at that time let me know if you are coming. You know it is quite important.

Also I wish to ask you about the dicky. And how old is Robin?

I was thinking I know something you father needs desperately and I wish to talk this over with you. Also could you please let your sisters know that not to send any Christmas present until I let you know what to give him.

Also do you know what size dress Robin wears?

Hope you received the articles I sent you air-mail.

Durand, Wiltbank win LCSD seats

The Regency on Laurie Lane
Nov 10, 1986

Dear L & Bob -

Greetings! It is evening. It has been a beautiful Autumn day. Our mums are beautiful, the orange tree continues to grow apiece (and oranges too), and this year there are more lemons hanging over the neighbor's fence into our yard. This afternoon Marie & I moved the sundial to its new location in the west flower garden. New petunias were planted around it (Fun - working outdoors!)

Where it formerly stood in the back yard there is now a 7' 6x6 redwood post atop of which rest a 50 lb. school bell I purchased as a gift to Marie. It symbolizes her two decades plus of teaching. Yes, it rings. Loudly enough to awaken the dead (asleep in their beds)!

Marie is sound asleep on the couch having been lulled to sleep by the relaxing work in the warm Autumn sun. (It seems that each time I write she is resting or sleeping, but that is because I relax by writing. So we engage in our mutual resting periods.) We paid a visit to Dr. King (regular appointment) and I'm happy to report her SMAC, vitals, blood counts are all in the normal range, and that girth and weight remain constant. Today I visited the store and purchased ingredients for some holiday cookie baking. M-M-M! I can hardly wait. She makes such delightful goodies!

And this morning I took my car into a Glendale body shop for some slight body refurbishing due to a brush with an aspen tree while campaigning in Greer. Marie and I are gearing up psychologically to tackle finishing up the work in the garage. I had hoped we could get around to getting out to purchase a sweater (or 2) and new tennis shoes for Marie today, but we didn't make it.

Today they canvass the votes in Greer, The elections supervisor in St. Johns assure me it dealt with write-in votes only. My win still stands (unless someone contests it). I got the most votes in a field of six candidates. Jack Wiltbank, a life-long Greer resident, received the second most votes. So it looks like we two have a four year term on the Little Colorado Sanitary District Board. It was sort of fun seeing it reported on the front page of the White Mountain Independent. "Durand, Wiltbank win LCSD seats."

Ruthie and Jane took us to the Renaissance Fair at their church Saturday. It was fun. The staff and church members were attired in Elizabethan costumes. There were jugglers, archers, farmers market, handcrafts and a processional of HRM Elizabeth I led by Scottish bagpipers & including the Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Burghley, Sir Francis Drake, William Bradford, a pilgrim, etc. There was a short drama depicting the religious history of the time with HRM cautioning the Puritans that they were being carefully watched. Wm. Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway recited parts from William's play.

This morning I understand they had an Elizabethan period worship service follow by a feast in the patio on velvet table cloths covered with lace. Fun, huh?

Haven't hear from our busy Becky the last couple of days, but did have a visit from Rick, Kim, and that oh so bright chunk of a great-grandson, Collyn. Marie & Kim had a discussion about raising children who won't want to sleep and Rick made a payment on his car loan. Our dancing sisters are busy teaching and preforming this terpsichorean arts.

Stevie & Stephanie celebrated their birthdays together. We attended one segment: lunch after church and present opening at Steve's home afterwards. It wasn't the most joyous occasion. Steve seems terribly tired and uptight - he has us all worried. A letter from you and from Bob might be appreciated by him. But don't mention we told you of his "weariness", please!

Called John to let him know of my "victory" at Greer. John was very warm & congratulatory & expounded on the importance of my new post. All goes well there. "Their" candidate won handily in W.F. first Republican in the history of the county. The newspaper blamed his victory on "right wing extremists" and "big bankers." Since John invested quite a bit of cash into the campaign he figures he is one of the "big bankers" - but "right wing extremist!" - that made John really bristle!

And now a brief extra content statement or two from the older German Baptist preacher - Dunker Durand - or Dee Dee, for short.

1. My proclamation today is "Enter into God and one never leaves. Reading the lives of mystics they speak of a glory they experience. This glory is come remarkable way appears to be the essence of the experiencing individual." "Essence" = the permanent as contrasted with the accidental element of being.

2. Someone once described me as a quiet bull in a china shop: a repressed aggressiveness. Don't wave a red flag in front of me. Maybe they are right! I'll bet LCSD Chairman, Kellis, is sorry he was rude to me on the plan last June. The bull in me went into action and I burst into the Board's front door & broke some of their china!

3. How would you guys describe yourself: towering sunflowers or demure creeping vines (or periwinkle) - blossoming early like the crocus - or late like the Chrysanthemum? Well, better turn Mon night football off!

Bye, Love Frank

Becky and Her Little Family

Lincoln, Nebr.
May 13, 1965

Dear Marie -

Thank you for the telephone call last Sunday.

Your father and Dora were to visit me Tuesday. We spoke about you. And I said that Becky and her little family were coming for a visit to see us. Both said that will be fine.

I plan to call you next Sunday as far as I know now. I surely wish that you would let me know if you are coming or not to Nebraska. Also I wish to ask if you have received the other clippings I sent recently. And also if you receive this letter by Sunday.

Excuse writing.
In haste)
With love and best wishes
I remain,
As ever,
Mother.

I mean full length and not just the bust...

Omaha, Nebr.
Feb. 1, 1947.

Marie -

I sent you a letter recently and hope you received it.

Marie I intend to send you a birthday present real soon. I hope you have a birthday cake for your birthday with all the trimmings. I received a nice little gift from my friend out in Monterey, California. She wrote that all her children went together and bought her a new gas stove as a Christmas present. This lady is only 5 months older than I am.

Marie if you don't mind would you send me money for the whole month, that is $10.00? I need it very much. It is real winter weather here with snow and around zero in temperature. I suppose the weather out there is about like California weather.

Marie, have your picture taken like the young lady's picture below. And have a photograph taken of all of you on one picture and how about planning to have it taken on your birthday when you will be 29 years old? It would seem like an occasion for celebrating. Please answer soon as you receive this. Mother.

P.S. Marie don't tell any one it is your birthday and plan out how to arrange your plans. Just some plain pictures but have full size, but not big pictures. I mean full length and not just the bust as the little girls pictures are you know from head to toe. You can sit down and Frank, you hold the baby on your lap and Ruthie standing in the middle. Don't wear your glasses. Please write and don't delay.

P.S. Pictures about size of this sheet of paper. Thank you.

And the clipping (referencing the photo):
And interesting article on the back of said photo:

"But please don't neglect your mother."

Lincoln, Nebr.
July 4, 1965

Dear Marie -

I received your type-written letter dated June 17th. I was pleased to hear from and thank you for your welcome letter. I hope you all enjoyed being together.

I was wondering if the gift package I sent to Betty's children arrived while you were at Betty's house. I sent Betty something later and hope she has received it. I also hope the package I sent to you containing drinking glasses was received.

Marie, I do wish that you could take time to come and help me. I would be so pleased and I would not mind helping you with expenses. So please Marie will you keep in mind that when I know more I will let you know about the details. Perhaps you could arrange to come with Becky comes.

Now Marie didn't you leave me when I wasn't feeling well? So do me this favor and come when I let you know. I am glad you went out to see Betty and Lottie. But please don't neglect your mother. Oh I haven't hear anything from Stanley about Elin coming. Perhaps you could call Elin over the telephone and find out what she says being she hasn't answered my letter. Will you call Elin pretty please? Elin's telephone no. is MV46240.

Then when I call you, you can let me know. I will call you when I receive my money.

I was reading an article in a magazine by - quote - Faith Baldwin - The Open Door. And in part - more light, said Goethe. And we need it always; we need it in our physical lives but even more in our hearts and spirits, and shed upon our paths. We need to carry it with us, so that we can give it to others, friends and strangers; the light of hope and courage, the light of knowing the everlasting mercy of God. Un-quote. And this article is for July 1965.

I will call some evening after 6 oclock and hope you will be at home. Hope you all liked the news-paper articles I sent. Let me know when I call.

With love and best wishes.
I remain
As ever
Your Mother.

In haste.)

"The big football game of the year ASU vs. Univ of Arizona"

Glendale, AZ
Nov. 24, 1991

Dear "L" -

Just a brief note (Ha! Ha!) to let you know your $300.00 arrived and will be turned over to the Orpheus treasurer Tuesday night! Thank you. Glad you will be going along.

It is a beautiful Sunday afternoon here - peaceful & lazy. In fact, I just arose from a brief nap. LouBelle is still napping - along with one dog and two cats. Quite a sight!

I was first to start a nap. LouBelle was on the patio surveying the newspaper - but fell asleep and nearly fell out of her glider, so decided bed was safer.

She is not lazy: yesterday she arose at 5:30 AM for her therapy trip & then went all day until 2:00 AM. So, maybe she deserves a rest.

Included, yesterday was a bathroom papering project which she and Becky did. Becky was the chief & LouBelle the assistant. I was up early preparing - sizing, etc. Then Collyn & Kenny came over.

Next on the agenda was the big football game of the year ASU vs. Univ of Arizona. In order to get parking we left for Tempe two hours earlier than the game. We bought food at the "tail gate party" & took it up into the reserved seats to eat. (LouBelle has season tickets).

It was an exciting game! I have never cheered & stood so much as a game! ASU won! (37-14) beating a ten year losing streak with U of A! The crowd was delirious!

U of A fans (100's) left the stands early in the fourth quarter & missed Tucson's only scoring.

After the game fans poured onto the field. Being prepared in advance Security started immediately to dismantle the goal posts. One upright, however, didn't get down soon enough & was carried by happy fans (thousands) to the far stands where it was passed up tier-over-tier to the very top level (some 80 feet). It's a wonder someone didn't fall over the balustrades as they reached over to grasp the upright.

Despite please over the P.A. system to clear the field joyous fans didn't respond. Security could do nothing. They finally formed lines across the field beginning at the 15 yd line and systematically swept forward in a series of movements (with intervals of hesitation) much like a garbage compactor.

I counted 100 security personnel. Accidentally (or purposely) the sprinklers were turned on. But joyous revelers leaped into the spray dancing as they did. The only dampened spirits were those of the security personnel.

Gradually & finally the celebrants funneled off the field still singing & cheering. The left voluntarily & naturally & then the "security choreography" was really only symbolic. They were only part of the choreography - perhaps like a marching band formation.

Personally, I thought it all ridiculous. The crowd was a happy one not bent on doing harm. The "marching army" looked more like tanks moving towards hapless victims in the take over of some unarmed town during an invasion.

But we won!! And we had to see a replay of the historic game after we got home - thus to bed at 2 A.M.

And then this A.M. it was church followed by Esther's surprise birthday party. In the memory book we saw a letter from "L". We were quite a contrast to the rest of the crowd there in the matter of dress. It was a very informal, but nice occasion.

And now we have wasted time happy with so much to do. Our adult children will get Symphony tickets for Xmas. And despite busyness L.B. & I will take walks & exercise more to diminish our dimensions.

Again thanks!   LOVE Franko

"I hope there won't be snow in the mail box."

Lincoln, Nebr.
Feb 1965

Dear Marie -

Enclosed you will find greeting card and money order. Perhaps you and Frank can arrange to go out and have a steak dinner the 12th of February.

We had oyster soup in the evening when I was in Omaha with oyster crackers at your father's house.

I was intending to cal you over the telephone last Sunday. It snowed here so I didn't call as you know I telephone from the drug store or at an out-door telephone.

I surely hope that you can some day move to Portland in the not too distant future. But plan as early as possible - why don't you?

I am intending to write to Frank and send him a little book. Hope Frank arrived back to his home safely.

Also I would like to know Becky's correct address. As near as I can read it - it is 4801 North 14th Pl Phoenix, Arizona 85014. Does the Pl stand for Place? I thought that I would send Becky's gift.

And I was thinking I would send you some things which can be put in your mail box.

Don't forget to answer when I call if Pl stands for Place. I like to write the address correct you see.

This pen isn't very good so excuse writing.

With love and best wishes.

In haste) I will send birthday present later.) Mother.

Monday Morning)
We did not get any mail for 2 days. Schools were closed. Please excuse in being late with sending the enclosed birthday greeting card. Also a clipping about the snow.

I read one place it was the most snow that fell at one period in history.

Please ask Frank to write for the family if you don't wish to take time.

I hope there won't be snow in the mail box.

Let me know when you receive this letter. Write soon.

With love and best wishes.
As ever, Mother.

"He has dreamed of taking a trip to see all of us "

Phoenix, Arizona
Feb. 11, 1955

Dear L & Family,

This seems to be my "family writing spree." I have written to the Durands, Mom, Pop, Betty - and now you. Actually, I find letter writing the hardest job I have. There are so many interruptions with two pre-schoolers (and their pals) plus the ever present, on-going routine that letters are set aside. However, my conscience twitches hard enough, sometimes to overcome the inertia. This is one of those times. I really find it fun to write once I get started.

First, we all want to thank you for all the keen Christmas gifts. The tools were an ideal gift for Stevie. He feels quite important to lend me his pliers or screw driver. He has become an expert "measurer" himself. The tape has inspired him to learn his numbers. Somehow inches and pounds are interchangeable words. He measured the telephone and announced "six pounds."

John loves his soft black lamb. It is the nicest stuffed toy the children have ever had. I think the girls would secretly like to have it for their beds. However, they are happy with their lovely collars. Ruthie will wear hers with a plain white nylon slip-on sweater & fall shirt when she plays in the 28 Piano Festival next week. Did you make the collars? They show evidence of your skillful work.

The candle holders from Norway are just right on our reed organ. Thanks again for everything. By the way, we have had your organ stool refinished & it looks beautiful!

We think many times of the enjoyable times we had in the Northwest last summer. It is really too bad that our children can't see more of one another. Both you & Betty have keen kids. Your roomy house and huge yard are ideal to raise a family. We will be interested to hear of your activities as you go along, for now it is easier to picture the setting.

Dora probably wrote to you that Pop's eyes have been failing & do not seem to be responding to treatment too well. He has another appointment April 24. I have urged that he get the best help available, regardless of cost. Pop is now 71 years old.

You know he has dreamed of taking a trip to see all of us & Dora's family around Taft, Calif. I am afraid that if we don't push him to make a definite decision he will never get that trip taken. He has never seen any of yours or Betty's children. I do want him to see Johnny Lars, especially. Here is the plan, in general., I have suggested to Pop & written about to Betty too. If you think it possible you might encourage him to carry it out. I suggested that he come by Golden State coach train to Phoenix sometime in May. That will be after his eye examination & before it gets really hot here. By the time he visits with us & in California, he can come on up to the Northwest. Betty ought to be feeling perky again by then, & I tell him he might as well see all the grandchildren possible. He certainly should not drive.

Mom sent me a nice Valentine & note. She is still concerned about Martin's whereabouts. Also got a nice letter from Elin at Christmas.

We are all fine except for mild colds. Frank & the girls attended a Father-Daughter Campfire banquet last night. They looked cute in fresh uniforms. Ruthie is president of her C.F. group. Becky is president of her class.

Thanks again for the Christmas. Love to all of you - especially those swell kids.

Marie & All
