We Will Miss You, Betty!

Former Gresham resident Betty Caroline Jensen Pritchett Light died June 4 in Springfield. She was 87.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 17, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd.

Betty was born Sept. 14, 1924, in Omaha, Neb., to Lars and Ruth Norby Jensen. Betty graduated from Omaha Technical High School and married Morgan Pritchett in 1944. They moved to Oregon.

Betty earned a bachelor’s degree from Portland State University, a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Oregon, and a doctor of education in community college education from Oregon State University.

Betty was a founding faculty member of Mt. Hood Community College, becoming chairwoman of the business division a year later. She retired from Mt. Hood in 1986 as dean of communications, arts, humanities and social science.

Morgan preceded her in death in 1982. In 1985, she married Kenneth Light.

Betty served on the Gresham City Council from 1983-1986. She was very involved in civic life, both as an individual and in connection with Mt. Hood.

Her husband, Kenneth, preceded her in death in 2003.

Survivors include her son, Randall Pritchett of Gresham; daughters, Robin Church of Lowell and Royce Bishop of Auburn, Wash.; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Mt. Hood Community College Foundation, 26000 S.E. Stark St., Gresham, 97030; Planned Parenthood, 3727 N.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Portland, 97212; or The Salvation Army, 8495 S.E. Monterey Ave., Happy Valley, 97086-7844.

Bateman Carroll Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Betty's Wedding Plans

Dear "L" -

Just a brief note to let you know that we presently are holding space (tickets not in hand) on Alaska Airlines to make a jaunt up your way for Betty's wedding.

Present plans call for us arriving at Seatac on November 21, Flight #185, arriving at 4:20 PM.

Departure date is November 30. Flight 184 leaving Setac at 12:15 noon.

We want to know if these dates will be OK. Marie would like to arrive a few days (two) early to be of any assistance she can.

Marie's notes: I can function pretty well as "second girl" on last details. Also I'd like to be dunned for part of the expense of the foods, etc.

Any ideas on an apprropriate wedding gift for a couple who have everything?

Anything we should bring? Pic & Save, Price Club, Marshalls - here we come!

In the week following the wedding we should just relax, get things back in order, and take life as it comes. Should we be brave enough to start a tulip quilt? I copied the quilt pattern before it got away. Or maybe we should check out any old family pictures or records and see what we have?

We're trying to put together a week-long trip to Nebraska. The old "Durand Gang" is having a runion Sept 27 and 28 and with an invitation we've been trying to work around those dates to settle up the matters re Martin. Many phone calls and red tape have already been encumbrances.

Must quit now and get ready to take Bob to the airport. We've really enjoyed his stay. Hear the tape for more details.

Dear Bob -

Greetings comrade! It is May Day!

This is the day they celebrate by dancing around the May Pole in Red Square. Or am I confused? Don't answer that question!

Ah, well, whether or not that is how May Day is celebrated is of little import. Of import is my impulse to dash a note off to you.

Things are going well here. I did manage to catch a slight cold, so every once in a while I pull out my hanky and wipe my domi-nose. A domi-nose is a nose one develops from spending time playing dominoes.

Pretty poor joke! Youcould probably smell that one coming on!

It's hot here today. Technically they call it "warm". Don't believe it. It's hot! But we keep things watered. And they grow - and - grow - and ... 4737 really looks nice.

Marie is collecting ingredients to make a nice stew. She has also cooked up some rhubarb and is making some of her pressure cooked tender meat. This morning we did some major trimming and pruning on the orange tree, being careful not to disturb any of the new tiny "oranges-in-the-making".

In a few moments she will take to the couch for a rest. I hope she does. She will need it. She has been at things for several hours and at a steady pace.

Me? Well - I'm writing this letter to you. Later I will drop it in the mail at Hallmark and pick up some slides and prints there. (If there are some good and interesting shots I'll send some to you). Hm! I should be making the bed, too.

The family here is well. Jason is busy in the study here assembling an oak-veneer filing cabinet I bought. He is working off some time as an adoptee of the Creighton-Patch Kid program. He plans to go to Hawaii with the Creighton Youth fellowship gang for a work project there. Becky in busy (no?! You're kidding!)

Kathy is arranging her schedule so she can go with us (as a guest) to visit John & family in Wichita Falls the last part of May.

Steve is right in the middle of a high-powered fund drive at Creighton. Susie is our travel agent at the other end of the line in Wichita Falls where she is busy arranging transportation fo us from Dallas to Wichita Falls.

I surely enjoyed myself at Johnson Gardens. Thanks a lot for everything... the hospitality, bed & board, good company, trips, domino tournaments (I am too getting better!), coffee and conversation and just plain "buddy sharing". It was a relaxing time. I had time to think and study, too.

As you know I have a philosophical bent and interest. Maybe it's a drive.

I'll share with you what I have determined to be my basic belief. These are things one knows and things one believes. This is a belief.

There is only one Absolute. An Absolute is something everything can be compared to, but which can not be compared to anything else. The one Absolute is the mind of God from which all beauty, vurtue, and enlightenment flow.

Dialectical theology, however, proves that man cannot know the mind of God - only respond to it - not realizing in the conscious mind that this is what is happening.

We partake of the mind of God because we are part of Him.

Another thought. Don't get too attached to your Aug. 11 syndrome. I feel you have two or three (at least) good years ahead of you.*

Good luck on your garden. I have seen and heard the hard work you have been doing.

Found those brown pants! Sorry for any confusion.

Ruthie and Jane love the quilt. We’re slowed down a bit with head colds but are gradually getting things together and are in the Christmas spirit.

Had blood work done yesterday – fantastically normal results. Go for chemo the 12th so want to get some immediate chores done. Thanks again for all your help in getting the quilt going. You do good work in all departments. The wedding details prove it if nothing else ever did. You’re great.

Hope Bob is over his cold. Enjoy the Christmas season.
