It has been a while since I wrote letters

Dear Lottie -

I received the pretty greeting card, dated Aug. 3rd from Tulsa. Also letter dated Aug. 13th and enclosed clipping about Jackie. Thank you very much.

I had a nice letter from Esther and I intend to send her a sympathy card. Write more about - your visits on the trip - where you went.

It has been a while since I wrote letters so excuse me if I seem to be out of practice.

I intent to send something to Jackie, but haven't got it ready yet. Being I sew or make something, it is quite different than buying a present. It takes time.

I suppose you are rather tired. I wish to thank you for everything you gave me while in Omaha.

I had a short letter from Martin. Thie morning I received a postal card from Betty.

When I called up at the hospital to ask how your father was the answer was that he had been transfered to the other hospital. So later I went out to see him out at 80th and Dodge and he is in special care center as you perhaps know. I talked to him and he answered. He asked about Martin. Now in case you would like to call the hospital here is the number -

I supposed you wrote to your father's sister and then let her know about your father. And when you write please ask her if - she received my letter and I enclosed a handkerchief?

I was over to Dora's one day and I put up some curtains.

Think of me - I never had a sister

Omaha, Nebraska

August 18, 1969

Dear Lottie - To-day I have lived here 3 years.

I received the postal card post-marked Oklahoma. Also letter and the clipping about Jackie. Then also invitation from Jacqueline and thank her from me. Also I don't have her present ready, but please write and let me know what her favorite color is.

I am pleased that you had enjoyed your vacation.

I will have to sew some more on the sewing machine to see about the stitch. I haven't quite finished the blue dress and thanks for helping me with it.

When you were in Chicago how I wish you could have gone to see my second cousins, you could have called me by telephone here and asked me about their number.

That was sad about Esther's sister passing away. She must not have been very old. I wrote to Esther August 3rd. I have a greeting card I'll send later. Has Esther returned to Phoenix yet?

How is your daughter Jill? It would be nice if she would live closer to you. Don't you think so too?

I am so disappointed that Marie couldn't stay 1 more day and grant my wishes. I had talked over the telephone about going out to Saunders County.

I have not heard from Marie or Betty since you all were here. I had a note from Martin asking if I had been to see your father? I haven't yet, it has been such hot weather here.

I wish Marie would move to Portland. That way you Marie and Betty could see more of each oher. You and your sisters have so much to talk about when you get together. Think of me - I never had a sister.

You know if a rather impersonal way I said to Jackie years ago that she should help you and I think, stay at home.

I also talked to Steven about the same way before he went away to California to attend college. Well you know how history turned out. Didn't your father used to say like pouring cold water on a duck's back?

I wish to thank you for all the different things you gave me while in Omaha.

Oh and would you do me a favor? Tell me about how it turned out when you all went to see Wiens. You know how careful your father was when it came to giving me any money. At present in Omaha a person can go and get advise in such cases.

Well you will have to write and tell me about the wedding. I suppose Betty will be there. If she comes would you mind lettering her read this letter? So why not put it in a good place where you know where it is.

We aren't so crude as to make you sleep on the floor

May 13 (1966)

Folks -

It's about time you wrote. We had already given up on you.

Jack - I hope you could come to the youth seminar - you can fly half fare, you know. All you have to do is apply for an ID card from the air-line! You get your card and you can fly half fare. It's great.

If you people come next summer: Mother, we aren't so crude as to make you sleep on the floor in sleeping bags. We have plenty of sheets and bed-space. Besides our day-bed in the dining room we do have a sofa bed that folds out and is quite comfortable. You needn't worry about that. And, if you wish, you may even sleep on the sun-porch. It's quite nice out there.

The drive from Phoenix to Tulsa is absolutely beautiful. You'll enjoy the scenery very much. Reminds me very much of Eastern Washington, in fact. Very pretty. By the way, it's a two-day drive.

Sorry to hear about Judy (Beeson) Syvertson's bad luck. Sounds like she really has had a bad time of it all. Very sorry.

Tibor and I are doing just fine. So is the baby. He kicks real well. I'm doing just fine, except my blood pressure is going up quite a bit and I'm swelling some. Today I wore a yellow dress to work and Tibor said I looked like a fat little daffodil.

I'm going to quit my job on June 3. Between now and then my boss is hiring someone and I have to train her. It's gong to be a pain in the neck trying to show someone in one week what I've done for the past several months.

The weather around here is being "typically Oklahoma". One day it will be clear, shining and 90 degrees, then the next day will bring tornado watches and thunderstorms. We love every minute of it. Because the weather is usually nice.

Glad to hear about Jak being assistant editor of the annual next year. Do a good job, Jak! So what is this big "complication" that might stop her from going to school at the U for a week?

Who is Mary Jean Tollefson marrying? And when?

That's nice Joan & Rick Lorenz are having a baby. It's happens often, you know.

March 22 (late 1960s)

Dear Dad

I received today both your letters and the package. Thank you so much for the mustard jar! No, I haven't changed my mind about it - I still love it - even more now! It goes so well with all my dishes and entertaining things! Thanks again!

Both of us are working hard - this week is mid-term exams. All the students come crying to the profs or come to study in the library. And they worry a lot, too.

Enclosed is a picture of us. It was taken at our house - we had friends in for dinner. We look happy because we are. We had just found out about great event and so naturally we were elated. We still are! It has made us so happy! We always were, but even more so, now. Anyway - I hope you like the picture.

The weather here is great. Averages are in the high 70's during the day. Today the wind is blowing. About 25 mph. It doesn't happen very often, though. Usually we have just a little breeze from the south at about 7 mph. We like Tulsa. It's such a pretty, nice, friendly town. We're so glad we moved here!

Please do me a favor. Tell your family to write. Nobody in Tacoma ever writes. We enjoy the letters so much, especially yours! Keep writing! We love you!

I should sign off now. I have many things to do yet this evening. Please write again soon. Better yet - why don't you come visit us? We have lots of room and we'd love to have you down! We'd like to show you our town and what we like best of it, and show you off to our friends. After all, not everyone has such a nice dad! Come on down when you can!

Oklahoma's corn and tomato crops

July 14 1966

Dear Dad -

Good to hear from you. Happy to hear all the news from up there.

You mentioned Mel was visiting Rox on Orcas Island. What are they doing there? Did they move or something?

As of today we have received two very indefinite postcards from Mother and Jacque. We sure hope to hear more soon. We'd better.

By the way - why hasn't Mark cashed that check we sent him in April. He'd better do it before it gets too old. Besides, it tempts me to overdraw on our account when I know there is still that two hundred to back up a hot check. Thanks.

I'm getting bigger every day! My abdomen measures 41 inches now - even bigger than my rear end! My clothes are getting bigger, though I've lost weight. Hooray! I'm feeling good for the most part, but I'm having a few distressing problems: I'm perpetually water logged and I tore a muscle in my back - right between a couple of ribs. It hurts, and now I can't lft or stretch until it healds - about another month to six weeks. I tore it at work lifting some books while taking inventory about a month ago. I'll learn better some day.

This heat wave were having certainly is bad. Oklahoma's corn and tomato crops are pretty much gone. It's too hot for me. I do wish it would rain.
