Martin misses you something terrible

You know

Dearest Marie,

It's now past ten o'clock so I'll just write a line, but after all a short letter is better than none at all. I called up the Schole's girls you know and here are the addresses of those girls:

Emily Morton - 2524 Capitol Ave
Harriet Johnson - 4968 So. 13th

I called up Billie Ruth and Emily. Emily's mother said she was at Okiboji but would be back soon. I talked to Billie Ruth a long time about nothing in general.

(I am going to mail those letters of yours with this one.) Mamma just said she mailed them yesterday (Monday).

Enclosed you will find a letter form Betty Nicholson. We get to keep the picture of you and me but I want you to send the others directly back to her. Please return her letter to me because I haven't answered it yet. Please don't answer the questions she asks though, I want to do it.

Toby gave me a beautiful, swell, elegant, grand, and splendid brown skirt. Also a black skirt and a jacket. She gave me three other dresses too, but I'm going to chuck 'em in the ashcan. They aren't any good. It won't break my heart to do it either.

Love Lottie

And on the other side of the paper...

Dear Betty,

How are you getting along as a guest of your relatives. Have you had the startling experience of taking a bath in a bathtub yet?

Martin misses you something terrible, in fact, he doesn't know what to do with you, Marie, and I gone all the time. Mamma's saving all the dirty dishes for you. They're stacked all over the table. (End of joke, laugh here.)

You (Marie too) really must excuse this hideous writing but I'm so sleepy I'm writing with half-closed eyes.

Yesterday I was through with the supper dishes at Pregler's at 7:15 P.M. I rested until 8:00 and then went with Toby up to get her hair cut, shampooed and finger-waved. She looked 200% better now.

How do you like the pictures? Marie looks like she is about to do someting and I look like I'm terribly mad. Every one of the consellors looks like somebody they aren't.

Well, be a good girl and enjoy yourself (I sneezed at this point).

Lots of love,
Lottie

That money is almost used up now

Omaha, Nebr.
Feb. 24, 1946

Marie -

Well I thought I would write a few lines to you being this is Sunday afternoon. I hope that you received the last note I sent with the birthday greeting card. Did you have a happy birthday? Please write and let me hear how you passed the day before you forget. I have been looking for the water bottle Marie which you wrote in your letter that you would send as soon as you get a chance to go shopping. I hope you are not working too hard so that you can't find time to go out and take a walk in the fresh air.

And how is Frank and the children? No doubt you are looking forward to summer when you are leaving Chicago.

Marie please try have a family picture taken and please don't any of you look at the camera. And don't wear your glasses. Answer me when you write Marie about pictures.

I was thinking that I thought it would be nice if Betty and Morgan could come for a visit to you when Frank graduates in June. You can be thinking this over and then write Betty.

Yes I was over to Fremont to see Dave as he stays there. Well I wanted to see him about having some repairs made to the house here. Hasn't there been a great deal printed in the news-papers about housing conditions?

Now about my utilities, you know there is only one water meter. So the people up-stairs pay the bill and that is taken out of their rent. And your father pays the electric light bill. Also he has brought me package coal this winter. Now about food, I have had some money which I have spent for food but that money is almost used up now. So Marie do you think you could send me some money what you can spare? You don't need to send the water bottle if you haven't already bought it. You may send the money instead and please Marie will you send money just as soon as possible?

Yes Lottie, Betty, and Martin sent me something for Christmas as well as Elin. But Marie I have had some personal taxes that should have been paid a long time ago. And your father didn't want to pay them for me. So with some of the money you sent me at Christmas I paid taxes with.

Now about 100 Home Avenue I wish that you or Frank could take a taxi some time and go out and se about about how big the house is. But first Frank could look up and see where it is being the street name has been changed.

Thank you for sending the letter from my cousin. I hope that you can visit them real soon and see how my cousin is who had injured her knee.

There are many divorces in Chicago isn't there? Even Sonja Henie and do you take any dayly paper? And so many young brides coming to America from England. I read that this was a greatest number of youmg woman coming to this country in 2 hundred years. But that they would be an asset to the States. The biggest number of women and children at one time. Marie I have written you about coming to Omaha and why can't you answer me about this. You know you have some things here still.

I wish that you would write and answer questions. I try to answer your questions. I hope I will hear from you this week.

So good-by,

I am,
Your
Mother.

P.S. You may sent any letter you have received from your sisters. Did you received the valentine box I sent with a few cookies? If you wish you may send me a pair of stockings.

I just love my muu-muu

Thank you especially for the pictures, Frank!

Mar. 4, 1963

Dear Marie & all,

First of all, please forgive us for being so pokey to thank you for your very nice Christmas presents. I just love my muu-muu. It's just perfect to slip on over my clothes when I come home from school. Jackie was especially thrilled with the ring Steven sent. She wears it every day and is so proud of it.

What a surprise to hear Becky is married! She is such a sweet little girl and will make a wonderful homemaker. I've had a little gift for her - I'll try to get it in the mail tomorrow.

Our family is about the same. Bill, Roxy's husband, was notified last week that he is in the finals for consideration for a Guggenheim Artists Grant. If he makes it, they will go to Italy for a year with all expenses paid. They were here for the weekend - he gave a lecture to an artists' group Friday night. It was a pleasant surprise - he was very good. Roxy is the same - still at the store.

Melody is working at an insurance office and still at her same apartment in Seattle. Kathy got married, and so Mel has a new roommate.

Jill sang a solo in the music contest yesterday - she got a "2" which was pretty good, I thought, since she has had no voice lessons. She also sang with a group "The Eight Notes", who received a first place.

Mark and Jacque are about the same, busy at school and at home. Mark has had (and still has) a series of staph infections which are so stubborn to treat. Jacque has been active on a basketball team. They play once or twice a week, and their team is in first place. The unusual part is that they are seventh and eighth grade but are so good they let them play in the high school league, (It's an all city-county set-up, not school sponsored) and even so have been defeated only once all season.

Mom called last week and has been writing to agitate for one of us to come back there. She doesn't realize our responsibilities. I cannot make the trip, but she asked me to write to tell you to come back there at Easter vacation time. Write her anyway, will you? I don't really know what either one of us could do for her if we went back but I know there is simply no chance at all of my going on a trip until this summer - and even than is pretty slim. How about you?

Haven't talked to Betty lately - do you know if anything came of Morgan's legal inquiry about her?

School is going just fine. Grade-wise, I have a B-ish average, but I don't work very hard either. I'm carrying seventeen hours this semester and hope to keep on doing so. With a little summer work and a little luck, I could finish in three years.

Let us hear from you Marie - and again the best of everything to Becky and her new husband.

Love,
L.
